Causes

The most common cause of a perforated ulcer is a peptic ulcer, which primarily occurs in the stomach or upper part of the small intestine. Other potential causes may include stomach cancer, severe inflammation in the digestive tract, or the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for an extended period.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a perforated ulcer may include sudden, severe, and persistent abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back. Other signs may consist of fever, nausea, vomiting, a racing heart, low blood pressure, and tenderness or rigidity of the abdomen.

Antibiotics and medications to reduce stomach acid production may also be prescribed.

Complications

If left untreated, a perforated ulcer can lead to potentially life-threatening complications, such as peritonitis (infection and inflammation of the abdominal lining), sepsis, internal bleeding, or obstruction of the digestive tract.

Preventive measures to reduce the risk of developing a perforated ulcer include avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, managing stress levels, maintaining a balanced diet, and avoiding the long-term use of NSAIDs without medical supervision.
