Parasympathetic Nervous System

The Parasympathetic Nervous System is a division of the autonomic nervous system that works in conjunction with the sympathetic nervous system to regulate various bodily functions. It is responsible for promoting relaxation, conserving energy, and restoring the body to a state of rest and digest.

Anatomy

The parasympathetic nervous system consists of cranial nerves originating in the brainstem (specifically the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata) as well as the sacral spinal nerves. These cranial and sacral nerves have long preganglionic fibers that connect to ganglia located close to or within the target organ.

Functions

The primary function of the parasympathetic nervous system is to counterbalance the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, thereby maintaining physiological balance in the body. Some of its key functions include:

  • Rest and Digest: The parasympathetic system promotes digestion and absorption of nutrients, as well as slows down heart rate and respiratory rate.
  • Pupillary Constriction: It causes the pupils of the eyes to constrict, enhancing near vision.
  • Salivation: Stimulates salivary glands, aiding in the digestive process.
  • Lacrimation: Increases tear production to keep the eyes moist.
  • Bronchoconstriction: Causes constriction of the bronchial smooth muscles, leading to increased resistance to airflow.
  • Urination and Defecation: It promotes the relaxation of the urinary bladder and rectum, facilitating elimination.

Neurotransmitters

The parasympathetic nervous system primarily uses the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to transmit signals between the nerves and target organs. Acetylcholine is released from both pre- and postganglionic fibers, allowing for efficient communication throughout the parasympathetic pathways.
