Ovulation:
Ovulation refers to the release of a mature egg from the ovary, which occurs as part of the menstrual cycle in females.
Process of Ovulation:
Ovulation is a complex process that involves the coordination of various hormonal changes in the female body. It occurs approximately once every month during the reproductive years.
Maturation of Egg:
During the early stages of the menstrual cycle, several follicles in the ovary begin to develop and mature under the influence of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), secreted by the pituitary gland. Eventually, one dominant follicle emerges and continues to mature.
Hormonal Surge:
As the dominant follicle reaches maturity, it produces increasing amounts of estrogen. This rise in estrogen triggers a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), also secreted by the pituitary gland.
Egg Release:
The surge of LH causes the mature follicle to rupture and release the egg from the ovary. This is referred to as ovulation and usually occurs around the middle of the menstrual cycle.
Egg Survival:
After release, the egg enters the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm if sexual intercourse has taken place. If fertilization does not occur, the egg eventually disintegrates and is expelled along with the uterine lining during menstruation.
Fertility Window:
Ovulation is considered the most fertile time for a woman to conceive. The egg remains viable for about 24 hours after ovulation, while sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days. Thus, the fertility window extends a few days before and after ovulation.
Menstrual Cycle Variations:
The timing and regularity of ovulation varies from woman to woman. Factors such as stress, hormonal imbalances, and certain medical conditions can affect the regularity and predictability of ovulation.
