Orofacial Apraxia

Definition:

Orofacial apraxia refers to a neurological condition characterized by the inability to voluntarily coordinate and execute the precise and purposeful movements required for speech production, facial expressions, and other oral motor activities.

Subtypes of Orofacial Apraxia:

  • Buccofacial Apraxia
  • Verbal Apraxia

Buccofacial Apraxia:

Buccofacial apraxia primarily affects the nonverbal orofacial movements such as blowing kisses, licking lips, whistling, or imitating facial expressions. Individuals with this subtype may have difficulty with fine motor tasks involving the mouth, such as using a straw or licking an object.

Verbal Apraxia:

Verbal apraxia, also known as apraxia of speech or verbal dyspraxia, specifically affects the ability to plan and execute the precise movements required for accurate speech production. Individuals with this subtype may experience difficulty in producing sounds, syllables, and phrases, leading to speech that is disorganized, effortful, and unintelligible.
