Operational Hypothesis

An operational hypothesis is a proposed explanation or prediction about the relationship between variables in a research study. It is based on existing theories, observations, and prior knowledge in the field. This hypothesis guides the researcher in designing and implementing an experiment or study to test the hypothesis in a systematic and measurable way.

Components of an Operational Hypothesis

An operational hypothesis consists of the following components:

  1. Independent Variable(s): This is the factor or factors that the researcher manipulates or controls in the experiment.
  2. Dependent Variable(s): This is the variable or variables that the researcher measures or observes to determine the effects of the independent variable. These variables are expected to change as a result of the independent variable.
  3. Relationship: The hypothesis predicts a specific relationship between the independent and dependent variables. It may state that there is a positive or negative correlation, a cause-and-effect relationship, or no relationship at all.

Example of an Operational Hypothesis

Independent Variable: Daily exercise routine
Dependent Variable: Physical fitness level
Relationship: There is a positive correlation between the frequency of exercise and the physical fitness level of individuals.

In this example, the researcher predicts that individuals who engage in a higher frequency of exercise will have higher levels of physical fitness. The operational hypothesis guides the researcher in designing a study to measure the physical fitness levels of individuals who follow different exercise routines.
