Definition of Oogenesis/Ovogenesis

Oogenesis, also known as ovogenesis, is the process of the development and maturation of female gametes, or ova, within the ovaries of sexually reproducing organisms. It is responsible for the production of eggs, or oocytes, which are essential for the reproduction and continuation of the species.

Stages of Oogenesis:

Oogenesis occurs through several distinct stages:

1. Oogonium Stage:

The process begins during the prenatal development of a female organism, where precursor cells called oogonia undergo mitotic divisions to produce primary oocytes. These primary oocytes are arrested in prophase I of meiosis until sexual maturity.

2. Oocyte Growth:

At puberty, a select number of primary oocytes start to develop further under the influence of hormones. The oocytes grow in size and undergo significant changes in their cytoplasmic content.

3. Meiosis I:

During this stage, the primary oocyte resumes meiosis and progresses through the first meiotic division. This division results in the formation of two haploid cells – a secondary oocyte and a small polar body.

4. Meiosis II:

If fertilization occurs, the secondary oocyte enters meiosis II, but the process arrests at metaphase II. Successful fertilization triggers the completion of the second meiotic division, resulting in the formation of a mature ovum and another polar body.

5. Ovulation:

Following the completion of meiosis II, the mature ovum is released from the ovary during ovulation, where it can potentially be fertilized by a sperm.

6. Fertilization:

If fertilization occurs, the haploid nucleus of the sperm fuses with the haploid nucleus of the ovum, forming a diploid zygote. This marks the beginning of embryonic development.
