Nucleotide

A nucleotide is a basic building block of nucleic acids, which are the molecules that carry and transmit genetic information in living organisms. It is composed of three main components: a nitrogenous base, a pentose sugar, and a phosphate group.

Nitrogenous Base

The nitrogenous base is a heterocyclic compound that contains nitrogen atoms. There are four types of nitrogenous bases found in DNA nucleotides: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G). In RNA nucleotides, uracil (U) replaces thymine (T) as a nitrogenous base.

Pentose Sugar

The pentose sugar, also known as the deoxyribose sugar in DNA or ribose sugar in RNA, forms the backbone of the nucleotide. It provides a stable structure and serves as a linkage point for the other components of the nucleotide.

Phosphate Group

The phosphate group is a chemical group consisting of phosphorus and oxygen atoms. It is attached to the pentose sugar, specifically the 5′ carbon of the sugar molecule. The phosphate group contributes to the overall negative charge of the nucleotide and plays a role in the formation of the nucleic acid chain.

Nucleotides are linked together through a covalent bond between the phosphate group of one nucleotide and the 3′ carbon of the pentose sugar of the neighboring nucleotide, forming a nucleic acid chain.
