Definition of Non-REM Sleep (NREM)

Non-REM sleep (NREM) refers to the stage of the sleep cycle characterized by the absence of rapid eye movements (REM).

Stages of NREM Sleep

NREM sleep is further divided into three stages: N1, N2, and N3.

  • N1: N1 is the lightest stage of NREM sleep and occurs when a person transitions from being awake to sleep. It is characterized by slow eye movements and a relaxed state of the body.
  • N2: N2 is a deeper stage of NREM sleep where eye movements stop, heart rate and body temperature decrease, and brain waves become slower.
  • N3: N3 is the deepest stage of NREM sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep. During this stage, it is difficult to wake a person, and the body undergoes restorative processes like tissue repair and the release of growth hormones.

Characteristics of NREM Sleep

NREM sleep is often associated with restorative functions of the body and is crucial for physical and mental rejuvenation. It typically constitutes the majority of a person’s sleep time and is critical for memory consolidation, learning, and overall well-being. Unlike REM sleep, NREM sleep does not involve vivid dreaming.

Role of NREM Sleep

NREM sleep plays an essential role in various physiological processes, including promoting physical recovery, supporting immune function, regulating metabolism, and strengthening neural connections in the brain.
