Neurotransmission
Neurotransmission is the process by which nerve cells, or neurons, communicate with each other in the nervous system. It involves the transmission of signals or messages from one neuron to another across small gaps called synapses.
Synapse
A synapse is a junction where two neurons are in close proximity but not in direct contact. It is made up of three main components:
- Presynaptic Neuron: The sending neuron which releases neurotransmitters.
- Postsynaptic Neuron: The receiving neuron which receives neurotransmitters.
- Synaptic Cleft: The tiny gap or space between the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons.
Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across synapses, allowing neurons to communicate. They are stored in vesicles within the presynaptic neuron and released into the synaptic cleft in response to an electrical impulse or action potential.
Neurotransmission Process
The process of neurotransmission can be summarized in the following steps:
- Synthesis: Neurotransmitters are synthesized inside the neuron.
- Storage: Neurotransmitters are stored in vesicles within the presynaptic neuron.
- Release: When an action potential reaches the presynaptic neuron, neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft.
- Binding: Neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.
- Reception: The postsynaptic neuron receives the signal and undergoes changes in its electrical activity.
- Removal: Neurotransmitters are either broken down by enzymes, reabsorbed by the presynaptic neuron, or diffused out of the synaptic cleft.
This cycle repeats rapidly, allowing for the transmission of signals throughout the nervous system and enabling various functions such as muscle contraction, cognition, and sensory perception.
