Neuron
A neuron, or nerve cell, is an essential building block of the nervous system in animals. It is responsible for transmitting electrochemical signals throughout the body.
Anatomy of a Neuron
A neuron consists of three major parts:

  • Soma: The cell body of the neuron that contains the nucleus and other organelles.
  • Dendrites: Branch-like extensions that receive signals from other neurons and transmit them towards the cell body.
  • Axon: A long, slender projection that carries electrical impulses away from the cell body and transfers them to other cells.
Types of Neurons
Neurons are classified into three main types based on their function:

  • Sensory neurons: Transmit sensory information from sensory receptors to the central nervous system.
  • Interneurons: Serve as connectors between different neurons within the central nervous system.
  • Motor neurons: Send signals from the central nervous system to muscles, organs, or glands, enabling movements and responses.
Synapse
A synapse is a specialized junction between two neurons or a neuron and an effector cell. It allows the transmission of signals via chemical or electrical means.
Function of Neurons
Neurons are the primary functional units of the nervous system, and their main functions include:

  • Receiving input signals from other neurons or sensory receptors.
  • Processing and integrating incoming signals.
  • Generating electrical impulses (action potentials) that travel along the axon.
  • Transmitting output signals to other neurons or effector cells.
