Neurites
Definition: Neurites are the long, thin extensions of a neuron that enable communication and connectivity within the nervous system.
Anatomy of Neurites:
Neurites consist of two main types of extensions:
- Axons: Axons are elongated structures that transmit electrical impulses away from the neuron’s cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands.
- Dendrites: Dendrites are highly branched structures that receive electrical signals from other neurons and transmit those signals towards the neuron’s cell body.
Function of Neurites:
Neurites play a crucial role in neuronal communication and the formation of neural networks.
- Transmission: Axons transmit electrical impulses, called action potentials, over long distances by propagating the signals towards other neurons or target tissues.
- Reception: Dendrites receive incoming signals from other neurons at specialized structures called synapses, where neurotransmitters are released and bind to receptors, thus allowing information transfer.
Neurite Growth and Plasticity:
Neurites are dynamic structures capable of growth and branching, allowing for the establishment of new connections and the formation of new synapses. This plasticity enables adaptation and learning within the nervous system.
