Definition of Mongolism
Mongolism, also known as Down Syndrome, is a congenital disorder characterized by a distinct set of physical and intellectual traits.
Physical Traits
Individuals with Mongolism typically exhibit certain physical characteristics, including:
- Slanted eyes
- Flat facial profile
- Small stature
- Protruding tongue
- A single deep crease across the center of the palm
Intellectual Traits
Those with Down Syndrome may experience intellectual impairments of varying degrees. Some common intellectual traits associated with Mongolism are:
- Delayed cognitive development
- Difficulty with language and speech
- Short attention span
- Delayed physical milestones
- Impaired reasoning and problem-solving abilities
Cause and Treatment
Mongolism is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, resulting in a total of three copies instead of the usual two. The condition occurs randomly and is not related to race, nationality, socioeconomic status, or parental age.
While there is no cure for Down Syndrome, early intervention and appropriate medical care can greatly improve the quality of life for individuals with Mongolism. This may include speech therapy, physical therapy, special education programs, and support from healthcare professionals.
