Mitosis

Definition:

Mitosis is a crucial process in which a eukaryotic cell divides its nucleus into two identical daughter nuclei. It is a part of the cell cycle and plays a fundamental role in growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.

Cell Cycle:

The cell cycle refers to the series of events that occur in a cell leading to its division and duplication. It consists of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.

Interphase:

Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle and encompasses three stages: G1 (gap 1), S (synthesis), and G2 (gap 2). During this phase, the cell grows, replicates its DNA, and prepares for mitosis.

Mitosis Stages:

Mitosis can be divided into four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

Prophase:

During prophase, chromatin condenses to form visible chromosomes. The nuclear membrane disintegrates, and the mitotic spindle, made of microtubules, begins to form.

Metaphase:

In metaphase, the chromosomes align along the equatorial plane of the cell called the metaphase plate. The centromeres of each chromosome are attached to spindle fibers originating from opposite poles.

Anaphase:

Anaphase is characterized by the separation of sister chromatids. The spindle fibers shorten, pulling the chromatids apart and towards opposite poles of the cell.

Telophase:

During telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes at the opposite ends of the cell. The chromosomes decondense, and the mitotic spindle disintegrates.

Cytokinesis:

After mitosis, cytokinesis occurs, leading to the physical separation of the cell into two daughter cells. In animal cells, a cleavage furrow forms, pinching the cell membrane inward. In plant cells, a cell plate forms to divide the cytoplasm.

Mitosis is a tightly regulated process that ensures the faithful distribution of genetic material between daughter cells, maintaining genetic continuity and allowing for growth and development in multicellular organisms.
