Mitochondria

This theory, known as endosymbiosis, suggests that ancient eukaryotes engulfed ancestral prokaryotes capable of aerobic respiration. Over time, these engulfed prokaryotes evolved into mitochondria, becoming vital components of eukaryotic cellular function.
