Somesthesis refers to the process of perception and interpretation of sensory information related to the body and its movements through different senses such as touch, proprioception, and temperature.

Submodalities

  • Touch: Also known as tactile perception, touch enables us to perceive pressure, texture, vibration, and other physical sensations when an object comes into contact with our skin.
  • Proprioception: Proprioceptive perception allows us to sense the position, movement, and orientation of our body and its various parts. It provides us with a sense of body awareness and coordination.
  • Temperature: Temperature perception helps us distinguish between hot and cold stimuli, enabling us to react and adapt to different thermal environments and avoid potential harm.
