Sex Chromosomes

Sex chromosomes are a type of chromosome that determines the sex of an organism.


Sex chromosomes are a pair of chromosomes that determine an individual’s biological sex. They can be either X or Y chromosomes.


In humans, females typically have two X chromosomes (XX), while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).

Role in Determining Sex

The presence or absence of the Y chromosome is crucial in determining the sex of an organism. If an individual has at least one Y chromosome, they develop as male, whereas the absence of a Y chromosome results in female development.

Inheritance Patterns

Sex chromosomes are inherited in a characteristic manner. Females pass on one of their X chromosomes to offspring, while males transmit either an X or Y chromosome to their children. This pattern is responsible for the inheritance of certain genetic disorders, such as color blindness, that are associated with genes on the X or Y chromosomes.

Exceptions to the Standard Pattern

While humans generally have a typical XX female and XY male pattern, there are exceptions. Some individuals may possess variations in their sex chromosome composition, such as having additional X or Y chromosomes.
