Anterior Cingulate Cortex

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is a region of the brain located in the medial frontal lobe, situated between the prefrontal cortex and the cingulate gyrus. It is a part of the cingulate cortex, which is involved in several cognitive processes and emotional regulation.

Function

The primary function of the anterior cingulate cortex is to integrate cognitive, emotional, and sensory information. It plays a crucial role in various processes, including:

  • Cognitive Control: The ACC is responsible for monitoring and adjusting cognitive control, such as attention, conflict monitoring, decision-making, and error detection.
  • Emotion Regulation: This region regulates emotional responses, facilitates emotional processing, and helps in evaluating emotional significance and self-control.

Neuroanatomy

The ACC consists of two subregions: the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC). The dACC is primarily associated with cognitive control and conflict resolution, while the vACC is more related to emotional and social processing.

The ACC receives rich connections from various brain areas, including the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and sensory regions. It communicates with these regions through a dense network of neural fibers, contributing to its integrative role in cognition, emotion, and behavior.

Clinical Implications

Disruptions in the functioning of the anterior cingulate cortex have been linked to several psychiatric and neurological disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and chronic pain syndromes.
